Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Evan Drake was never meant to become a symbol. He was just a teenager trying to survive school, family pressure, and the ordinary fractures of growing up, until one violent night changed everything. After saving his sister from danger, Evan is discovered by Vanguard, the city's celebrated protector, and trained to become Shadow: a masked vigilante moving through the darkness to fight the criminal Syndicate tightening its grip on Crescent City. But heroism is not as clean as Evan once believed. When a mission goes horribly wrong and a police officer is killed, Evan is left carrying a guilt he cannot escape. The city's underworld grows more dangerous, a mysterious figure known as the Architect pulls strings from the shadows, and Lucky, a Syndicate insider who may be enemy, victim, or reluctant ally, keeps leading Evan deeper into a truth no one wants uncovered. Because sometimes the greatest villain is not the one hiding in the dark. Sometimes he is the hero who taught you how to fight.

Fans of Batman: Year One, Daredevil, Nightwing will find a hauntingly human take on heroism, sacrifice, and the cost of wearing the mask.

What readers are saying

  • “Shattered Masks is a gripping superhero thriller with far more emotional depth than I expected. Evan's struggle with guilt, family, loyalty, and identity makes the action feel personal. The tension builds steadily, and the betrayals kept me questioning who could truly be trusted.”

by Emily Carter, Amazon customer review

  • “What impressed me most was the balance between high-stakes crime and Evan's ordinary teenage life. His relationships with Mia, Rachel, Lily, and his mother give the story real heart.”

by Jason Miller, Amazon customer review

  • “This book turns the mentor-and-hero relationship into something chilling. Vanguard is intelligent, controlling, and frighteningly believable, while Evan remains sympathetic even when he makes mistakes.”

by Sophia Reynolds, Amazon customer review

  • “The atmosphere of Crescent City is one of the novel's greatest strengths. Rooftops, docks, alleys, safe houses, and crowded gyms all feel vivid and cinematic.”

by Daniel Brooks, Amazon customer review

  • “I enjoyed how the mystery unfolded through Lucky's warnings, Detective Crews's investigation, and Evan's growing doubts. The final chapters deliver strong revelations without resolving everything too neatly.”

by Olivia Bennett, Amazon customer review

  • “An engaging young-adult vigilante story about more than masks and crime. It examines grief, fractured trust, family responsibility, and the cost of becoming someone else's weapon.”
